Writing – Short Sentences

When writing in English, short sentences are often used for strong emphasis. When writing, Japanese users of English tend to use too many very short sentences, which reduces their effect and also makes the writing unnatural. One way of avoiding this is by using linking words.

For example, look at the following.

“I live in Sakai. Sakai is an interesting place to live in the south of Osaka.. Sakai is especially famous for making knives.”

Three sentences which could easily be written as one.

“I live in Sakai, which is an interesting place in the south of Osaka and famous for its knives.”

So, next time you write some homework, think about how your sentences could be longer.
