At the beginning of January 2020, just over 9 years since our school opened, we had our 1000th student sign up to study at UKPLUS Osaka.

UKPLUS Osakaが開校して以来9年が経ちました。そして2020年1月、ついに1000人目となる生徒さんが入学しました。

Over these 9 years we have helped a 1000 people from many different backgrounds have a better life through (studying) English.

この9年間、UKPLUS Osakaでは様々なバックグラウンドを持つ1000人の生徒さんたちを、英語を通してサポートしてきました。

Recently though, we have seen many more younger, high-school aged, students coming to the school. In some ways this is due to the large amount of Japanese universities who offer study abroad programmes, for which the kids need to get an IELTS score. But it is also due to young people becoming more aware of the life opportunities English proficiency can give people.

最近では、高校生や年齢層の低い生徒さんが増えてきています。これは、IELTSのスコアを取得し、海外プログラムを学習する機会を提供している日本の大学が多いことが理由の一つと考えられます。また、若い世代が英語が今後の可能性を広げるツールになると意識し始めているのかもしれません。

Below, Mchan (18), our 1000th student tells us a little about herself and why she chose UKPLUS Osaka.

今回は、1000人目の生徒さんとなった、Mさん18歳が彼女自身のことやUKPLUS Osakaを選んだ理由などについてインタビューに答えてくれました。

Who are you and what do you do? Give us some background to you and your life

Mちゃん

I’m a high school student and I’m going to go to university in Japan from April to study Sociology.My English ability helped me to get my place at Uni. When I was in the 2nd year of high school,I studied in New Zealand near Christchurch for 10 months. That was a great experience.

現役高校生で4月から大学生になります。高校2年生の時1年間の海外留学生活を経験しました。

UKPLUS:

Why are you studying English at UKPLUS Osaka? What are your goals for the future?

Mちゃん：

I’d like to get a high score in IELTS. I need at least Band 5.5 for a study abroad programme. I’ve not decided clearly but I hope I can study abroad again in the university life. I am thinking of going to Canada or the UK, but, as I say, I haven’t decided yet.

大学で留学プログラムに参加するためにIELTSのスコアが必要だったからです。

UKPLUS:

Why did you decide to visit UKPLUS Osaka? Was it the website that attracted you?

Mちゃん：

I searched about IELTS school on the internet, and I found ? IELTSの塾を探していて、模擬試験を受けることをできるのがわかったのでUKPLUSに一度行ってみようと思いました。

UKPLUS:

How did you feel when you came to the school for the first time?

Mちゃん：

I felt comfortable because the teacher, Tony, and the staff were very friendly and kind.

UKPLUS:

Why did you decide to study at UKPLUS Osaka?

Mちゃん：

When I went to ukplus for the first time, I felt comfortable, as I said, and I found it attractive because the staff were very helpful and knowledgeable about IELTS and my situation. I had been to other IELTS schools before but the attitude of the staff was different. I decided to study at UKPLUS because of the staff and teacher who interviewed me.

UKPLUS:

 Now you have started your lessons, are they how you expected them to be? Or different?

Mちゃん：

UKPLUS lessons are more difficult than I expected but there is also more opportunity to talk than I expected. Sometimes we talk about easy things too.

多彩なトピックに関して話したり議論できるチャンスが多くあります。

UKPLUS:

Is studying English at UKPLUS different to the English lessons in your school?

Mちゃん：

In my high school, there are 4 types of English class and they are separated by grammar, listening or speaking, and reading long sentences. Moreover, sometimes I have to make speeches and writing, so I don’t feel there are big differences between them. However, I think the topic I have to discuss about in UKPLUS is sometimes difficult, but for IELTS I need to become more confident in giving my opinion on different subjects. Last week we were talking about crime, for example.

IELTSで良い結果を残す為には様々なトピックに対して自分の意見を述べる必要があります。

UKPLUS:

How could English education in Japan be made better?

Mちゃん：

We have to change school education systems to be made better. For example, in Japan we have to take notes perfectly and listen carefully to what teachers are saying but there are no conversations with classmates otherwise the teacher might get angry. But I think discussion is really important to know what other people are thinking about and to learn other viewpoints. The world is changing very quickly but Japanese English education system is the same as before. I think the Japanese government should understand this.

日本の英語教育では生徒個人の意見を広げる手助けができていません。

UKPLUS:

What are your feelings about UKPLUS Osaka now that you have started studying (teachers, staff, school facilities, other students)?

Mちゃん：

I think teachers and staff are kind. The system of books that students can borrow is good to know about topics detail that will be useful for IELTS or study. I was surprised the students who I met can speak English fluency.

役立つ本が借りられるシステム が良い。/ 他の生徒の方がとてもスラスラ話していることにびっくりしました。

What is the best thing about UKPLUS Osaka?

Mちゃん：

The best thing about UKPLUS Osaka is that I can learn new things that I didn’t know before. Especially I have been learning a lot about IELTS writing and speaking sections and how to answer the different questions.

What do you think you will be doing in ten years times?

Mちゃん：

I cannot imagine me 10 years later, but I hope I am working somewhere, maybe in Japan or maybe overseas.

10年後何をしているか想像できないけれど日本か海外で働いていればいいなと思います。
